Coherent strategy for Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is one of the most successful philanthropic organization that has carefully aligned its strategy based on the strengths and available resources. The organization focuses on improving people’s health and giving them the chance to lift themselves out of hunger and poverty. The organization also focuses on improving the education in US, by enabling people with fewest resources to have access to the opportunities they need to succeed. Based in Seattle WA, the organization works under the direction of Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett.
The organization develops its strategies based on the tough problems that the organization seek to solve, like world health and hunger. The organization focusses on how to use resources to improve people’s lives, and how does the organization collaborate with its partners to deliver high impact results. When developing strategies, organization focusses on what it does best and what are its key strengths that can be leveraged. The strategies of the organization share common characteristics:

  • ·         All strategies seek to achieve catalytic change. The organization does not invest in delivering health or education services.  Instead, it identifies ways to leverage systems and innovate so these services achieve better outcomes for people.
  • ·         All strategies leverage organization’s partnerships to achieve impact.
  • ·         All strategies underscore the role of technology. Technology has a role to play in different contexts—from online learning models in US education, to new seed varieties in agriculture, or innovative delivery mechanisms for vaccines.
The organization then follows a framework to guide the work. Once the strategy is developed the organization then allocate resources, make grants, capture and share data on progress, reflect on lessons learned, and course-correct, as necessary.

The key thing to note is that the organization carefully chooses the areas it wants to work in based on its strengths in technology and the strength of their partnerships.  The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is an excellent example where the leadership drives the strategy development with a central focus on the goal of delivering high-impact results based on their strengths in different areas.
